Everything You Should Know about the Apple MacBook Pro Released in 2014

Whether you need to leave the house or want a change of scenery, portable computers can help you stay productive even when a power source is not available. The MacBook Pro models released in 2014 are able to be taken with you wherever you need to go for business or personal time. Here is everything you need to know about these products.

What are the similarities between all of the 2014 models?

Other than some minor variations, the MacBook Pro models that were released in 2014 were all quite similar. The similarities include:

  • Software: All 2014 versions are capable of running both OS 9 and OS X applications. OS X is the standard.
  • Storage: These versions all have flash storage chips to store your files. Available storage ranges from 128GB to 512GB based on the version.
  • Display: All MacBook Pro models released in 2014 have a Retina display.
  • Keyboard and trackpad: All versions have a backlit keyboard, allowing work on documents in low lighting. The trackpad features "no-button" touch bar technology.
  • Features: These models all have an integrated FaceTime webcam and a sealed battery.

What are the differences between the 2014 MacBook Pro versions?

The 2014 MacBook Pro series includes eight models overall. The two main differences between the different variations include the size of the display, which can either be 13 inches or 15 inches, and the processor speed. The 15-inch versions also give you the option to choose between integrated graphics and discrete graphics. The differences between versions are:

  • 13-inch Core i5 versions: The two models in this category have Core i5 processors, one of which runs at 2.6 GHz while the other runs at 2.8 GHz.
  • 13-inch i7 version: This mid-2014 MacBook has a Core i7 processor that runs at 3.0 GHz.
  • 15-inch i7 IG versions: These three 15-inch versions have Intel Core i7 processors that run at 2.2 GHz, 2.4 GHz, and 2.8 GHz.
  • 15-inch i7 DG versions: The Core i7 processors run at either 2.5 GHz or 2.8 GHz. In addition to an integrated Intel Iris pro graphics processor, the two DG versions include a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M processor with 2GB of dedicated RAM.

What is a Retina display?

A Retina display is a high-resolution screen. It has a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels compared to the normal 2,560 x 1,440 pixels that was a commonplace update on 2014 laptops. The higher the resolution, the more clear and sharp text and photographs look on the screen. Further, because there are more pixels to work within MacBooks that have a Retina display, the text and images stay clear even when you zoom in to make them larger on your screen.

What connectivity options do the 2014 MacBook Pro models have?

All early-2014 and mid-2014 MacBook Pro models have a variety of options when it comes to connecting to the internet or other devices. All versions are 802.11ac Wi-Fi capable, have Bluetooth 4.0 capabilities, an SDXC card slot, and an audio in/out port. The MacBook Pro laptops released during this time also feature several "Thunderbolt 2" ports and USB 3.0 ports. An HDMI port lets you watch movies or play games on a larger screen.
