Motorcycle Carburetors Parts for Yamaha V Star 650

Driving the roads will put a beating on your classic Yamaha V Star 650 model over time, wearing down engine parts along the way. One of those critical systems affected by the stress of the road is your Yamaha motorcycle’s carburetor. Dirt and debris can degrade the carburetor, but the availability of motorcycle carburetors for Yamaha V Star 650 make replacing parts for your cruiser a straightforward process.

How does a carburetor work?

The main job of the carburetor is to mix air and vaporized fuel together and send the concoction down to the cylinders powering your V Star 650. There are four main components that make up the carburetor, which are listed below:

  • The float system is a reservoir and staging area for fuel before it goes to the motor of your Yamaha V Star 650 motorcycle. Fuel flows into the float chamber through a valve at the top of the chamber. The valve is opened and closed by a floating ball that is attached to a pivot arm. When the fuel in the chamber falls below a certain mark, the pivot arm will pull the valve open and close it once the chamber fills back up.
  • The Venturi pipe is a straight piece of pipe that kinks in the center to accelerate incoming airflow from the air intake. This causes a vacuum that will draw fuel out of the float chamber of your Yamaha.
  • The throttle valve is controlled by the accelerator on your Yamaha and sits in front of the Venturi, regulating the airflow being allowed into the motorcycle. More air means more of a vacuum, which in turn means more fuel and more speed.
  • The fuel jet on your bike regulates the amount of fuel flowing into the motor. It connects to the float chamber and empties into a well of air bleeds and baffles that vaporizes fuel before being pulled into the Venturi pipe.
What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket carburetors?

In your hunt for a replacement carburetor for your custom Yamaha, you will have to decide between purchasing Original Manufacturer Equipment (OEM) and aftermarket parts. OEM parts are produced by Yamaha to specifically fit your V Star 650. Aftermarket items are made by third-party companies and are designed to fit bikes with similar specifications. Even though aftermarket parts are not designed just for your bike the same way classic OEM parts are doesn’t mean they are of lesser quality or won’t last as long.

How do you replace your carburetor?
  1. Make sure to unhook the battery cables before doing anything else. There is a risk of fire due to the fuel in the carburetor. Next, remove the air filter assembly, the choke linkage, throttle, and fuel line.
  2. Remove all the mounting hardware and carefully remove the carburetor from the motor. Keep it level so as not to spill any fuel that might be inside it. Drain the fuel and remove the gasket from the intake manifold.
  3. Rub the gasket clean with a cloth rag, and then replace it and the new carburetor. Reconnect everything in the reverse order from which you took it apart.
