Cast Iron Teapots
A cast iron teapot is the perfect way to make tea. Because the cast iron retains heat so well, you can quickly have boiling water ready to serve a variety of different teas. If you aren't a tea drinker, an iron teapot can make a perfect gift.
What is a Yixing teapot?A Yixing teapot is a clay teapot made in the Yixing area of China. The clay used for the teapot is porous, allowing tea oils to build up over time. These increase taste and smoothness, giving the tea a unique flavor. The porousness allows the water to heat up faster, meaning less time until the tea is ready. There are a variety of teas, each with their own flavor. It is recommended that only one type be used per teapot.
What is a tetsubin teapot?A tetsubin teapot is a Japanese cast iron teapot. This iron teapot has been used in Japan for hundreds of years, traditionally for the Japanese tea ceremony. Because of the cast iron, water brewed in this teapot becomes extremely mellow and sweet. This water is then used to brew teas such as black, oolong, chamomile, and dragon. The tetsubin cast iron teapot can also be used to simply boil water, making contaminated water safe to drink.
How do you use a cast iron teapot? Before using your cast iron teapot, make sure it is thoroughly rinsed and clean. Dry the cast iron teapot inside and out with a cloth. To use your iron teapot for brewing, follow these instructions.
- Step one: Select your tea. Because cast iron absorbs oils and flavors, you will typically only want to use one type.
- Step two: You will need to preheat your teapot. Add hot water once the cast iron is hot.
- Step three: Measure your tea for the size of your cast iron teapot. Place the tea leaves in your strainer. Some cast iron teapots have a built-in strainer.
- Step four: Pour boiling water over the tea leaves and allow them to steep.
- Step five: After your tea has steeped fully, decant it into a separate container.
To ensure the longevity of your cast iron teapot, follow the proper steps for cleaning. When cast iron is taken care of properly, it can last for generations.
- Step one: Allow the cast iron to cool completely before cleaning.
- Step two: Rinse and gently clean the pot with warm water only. Do not use soaps or any other type of cleanser.
- Step three: Wipe the teapot dry with a cloth while it is still warm. Set the pot upside down to fully air dry.
- Step four: If rust appears, scrub it off with a soft brush and warm water.
- Step five: Ensure the cast iron is fully dried before storing.
