Ceramic Vases

Flowers brighten up a room, and pairing them with a ceramic vase can make their beauty shine even more. The immense variety of ceramic vases available makes it fun to choose one to give to a loved one or add to your collection. Whether you prefer a flower vase that is decorative or utilitarian, tall or short, slender or wide, considering a few points will help with your selection.

What are the advantages of ceramic flower vases?
  • One advantage of ceramic over glass vases is that the opacity of ceramic conceals stems and leaves as well as the murkiness that can occur when the water is not changed daily.
  • The pliability of ceramic allows it to be formed into any shape, meaning there’s a wide variety of attractive ceramic vases to choose from.
  • Ceramic vases can be any height, from a petite bud vase to a dramatic floor vase for displaying tall foliage.
  • Ceramic vases are easy to clean.
What vase options are available?

Ceramic vases can be found in a seemingly endless array of shapes, sizes, and colors.

  • Short, wide flower vases are tip-resistant. That is helpful in homes with small children or pets. Short, white cubes make a pretty display of pink carnations.
  • Tall vases make for dramatic displays, and they can be made more stable by filling the base with marbles or heavy rocks.
  • Medium-size hourglass-shaped vases are appropriate for small groupings of flowers with a little greenery.
  • Large bouquets with lots of foliage are beautiful in a wide cylindrical vase. A collection of white hydrangeas looks beautiful when displayed in a tall cylinder.
  • Ceramic bud vases have narrow openings for a single stem, and they often come in sets. Three white bud vases of varying heights create a pretty display of flowers. Tall, slender, black bud vases strike a classic dramatic image with a single long-stemmed rose of red or white.
What types of ceramic vases are there?

Ceramic is made of a combination of clay, water, and organic materials mixed in different combinations. Ceramic vases can be classified as earthenware, terracotta, stoneware, porcelain, or china. Most ceramic flower vases designed to hold water are made of porcelain, stoneware, or china because they are fired at higher temperatures and contain silica, which is the main component of glass. They are nonporous even without glazing. Porcelain is also translucent, which means it lets light through, but it is not transparent. It is often painted with patterns of blue, but its translucency is more apparent when the vase is left white.

What are other considerations?
  • For earthenware vases, look for styles that are glazed on the bottom. Alternately, small saucers or coasters can be placed underneath this type of vase.
  • Ceramic is easy to keep clean. Wipe vases with mild soap and warm water. Rinse out tall, slender vases frequently to avoid dirt or mineral buildup over time.
