A Guide to Changing Tables for Babies

When it comes to a nursery, changing tables are essential. Not only do these tables provide you with places to store all of your changing supplies, but they also provide a safe place to clean your child. Choosing a table that meets your and your baby's needs is important to provide you with peace of mind.

What types of changing tables are there?
  • Standard table: Standard tables have a platform that is between 36 inches and 43 inches tall. Some of these models have storage underneath whereas others just have some shelving. Larger tables may even have a sink attached so that you can wash your hands after changing your baby.
  • Wall-mounted tables: These changing stations are designed for older children. Some models may also be designed for adults who have special needs and who may need help.
  • Changing pad: These pads are designed to be placed on dressers or other furniture that you already have. The soft surfaces are either flat or slightly curved.
What are changing tables made of?

When it comes to determining what materials your changing table is made from, you should consider whether you intend to use the table for more than one child or if you intend to pass it down to others.

  • Real wood: Real wood tables for changing babies are durable and provide strength to hold the child while you are working.
  • Particle board: These work if you plan to use the changing table for one child or if you only need the table for a short period time.
What should you consider when looking for changing tables?
  • Storage: Some changing tables have drawers and shelves underneath the changing station. Depending on the table, you may be able to store diapers, wipes, and other supplies that you may need to keep your baby clean.
  • Size: Some changing stations and tables are larger than others depending on the amount of shelving each station offers. If you have a larger space, a combination changing table and dresser may fit. If you have a smaller nursery or if your baby is sharing a room with you, a simple changing station that sits on top of your other furniture may suffice.
  • Safety: Changing tables should come with a pad complete with a changing strap to keep your baby safe. Others have barriers on the sides to keep your baby from rolling off the table while you wipe, grab a new diaper, or change the baby's clothes. You will also want to be sure to anchor the table to the wall.
  • Height: The changing table should reach up high enough so that you do not have to lean over it.
