What You Need to Know About Cadillac SRX Complete Engines

Cadillac SRX was marketed between 2004 and 2016 as a mid-size luxury crossover SUV. Since its launch, the SUV has used only five types of engines making it easier for buyers to distinguish between each engine type. If you're looking for a used Cadillac SRX engine or a Cadillac SRX 3.0 engine, the eBay platform can help you get a reasonable price for such engines.

Types of Cadillac SRX engines

There are two generations of Cadillac SRX cars. The first-generation was produced between 2003 and 2009, and the second-generation was produced until January 2016. The following is a brief overview of the type of engines used on each generation of SUVs.

  • First-generation engine - The first-generation of cars used either the GM high feature 3.6L LY7 HFV6 V6 engine or the 4.6 L LH2 Northstar V8 engine. The Northstar engines were one of the most technically complex engines produced by GM until 2011. Examples include the 2005 Cadillac SRX engine 3.6 l v6 and the 2006 Cadillac SRX engine.
  • Second-generation engines - All of the Cadillac SRX models produced after 2009 used only the GM high feature engine. The three types of engines used in the second-generation are 2.8 L LAU V6, 3.0 L LF1 V6, and 3.6 L LFX V6. A 2010 Cadillac SRX motor is an example of the second-generation engine.
Is there a significant difference between Northstar and GM high feature engines?

The first-generation Northstar engines are usually associated with the Northstar series of Cadillac cars. These were powerful engines that used the double overhead cam, aluminum head V8 design, and four-valves per cylinder. Both the Northstar and GM high feature engines received positive ratings by critics, but GM decided to replace Northstar with GM high feature engines in the second-generation as the high-feature GM engine was easier to maintain due to its simple design. The Northstar engines resurfaced in 2018 when a new variant was introduced in other GM cars and models.

GM High Feature engines

This is a family of GM DOHC V6 engines that are sometimes identified by model numbers and derivates such as HFV6, LY7, and LP1. It has a 60-degree 24-valve design with aluminum block and heads. Most versions of these engines use continuously variable cam phasing and electronic throttle control for intake and exhaust valves.

Other main features associated with GM High Feature engines include piston oil-jet capability, forged and fillet rolled crankshaft, twin knock control sensors, coil-on-plug ignition, sinter forged connecting rods, and intake manifold of variable length.

The first of these was 3.6-L LY7 engines produced between 2004 and 2009 that were followed by turbocharged LP9 engines produced between 2010 and 2011. The LF1 3.0-liter engine was also produced at the same time. Cadillac SRX models also used an enhanced version LFX between 2012 and 2016, which was able to produce 308hp.
