Do More With SO-DIMM PC3-8500 Memory

Sometimes, you may find that your laptop isn't as zippy as it used to be, or that it can't keep up with your increased multitasking workload anymore. The bottleneck in the performance of your computer is likely the memory or RAM. This is an essential component of your computer system, which can improve the multitasking performance of your machine.

What Is PC3-8500 SODIMM RAM?

  • SODIMM: This is the acronym for small outline dual in-line memory module, which is the physical format for laptop or compact computer memory. They are shorter in width but are taller in height than regular DIMM RAM because they are mounted in such a way that the memory modules lay flat on the motherboard. The two form factors are nearly identical in performance. These DDR3 SDRAM modules have 204-pin layouts, while DIMMs use the 240-pin layout.
  • PC3-8500: PC3 is another way of saying that a SODIMM uses DDR3 technology. The number 8500 refers to the theoretical bandwidth of the DDR3 SDRAM.
  • DDR3: This stands for double data rate 3 memory. It is typically a type of unbuffered Non-ECC memory. It is the higher-speed successor to DDR2 and the predecessor to DDR4 memory. DDR3 SODIMM RAM is physically designed in such a way as to prevent you from slotting it into the socket of an incompatible motherboard. They do this through a key system that involved physical notches about an inch from the left of the module that should fit exactly into the key or protrusion in a compatible motherboard.

How Do I Determine Compatibility With My System?

  • User Manual: You will typically find your laptop's motherboard specifications in the user manual. In the spec sheet, look under the memory subcategory to find the type of RAM and the original RAM frequency in MHz your notebook takes.
  • Physical Disassembly: If you lost or cannot find the manual, you can take out the backplate of the laptop to see the motherboard labels. Near the SODIMM slots, you should see "PC3-8500 DDR3-1066 MHz" printed beside the sockets.

What Laptops Are Known to Use This Type of RAM?

  • MacBooks: You can upgrade the stock RAM of your MacBook Pro with 1066 MHz 8 GB DDR3 RAM to keep it running for longer. The laptop has two SO-DIMM 204-pin slots so you can add up to 16 GB of DDR3 1066 SDRAM.
  • HP Notebooks: Non-gaming laptops like older Pavilion lines use DDR3 1066 MHz SO-DIMM RAM. Newer standards are typically reserved for the gaming crowd and using PC3-8500 RAM helps make these machines more accessible to buy. You can easily double the RAM of your machine by swapping out the old modules with larger compatible ones.
  • ASUS Notebooks: Netbooks and laptops like the A53E series use DDR3-8500 memory. Base model laptops can benefit from a memory upgrade because it can easily increase their performance dramatically.
