What types of headlights are available?

There are several different types of automobile head lamps available, each of which has features that make them useful in specific circumstances.   • Halogen: Long the standard in automobile lighting, halogens use a design that is similar to incandescent lights used in homes for years. However, unlike incandescent lights, halogens have halogen gas inside of the bulb. This helps maintain the longevity of the lights. When the headlights are on, the extreme heat that the tungsten filament experiences causes some of the surface atoms to be vaporized, at which point they mix with the halogen gas. When the lights cool, the halogen gas acts as a catalyst for a process that redistributes the vaporized atoms back onto the surface of the filament. Because the filament regains some of the atoms that it lost, the lifespan of the headlights is extended.
  • Xenon HID: These are known for being remarkably bright, which is a function of the unique reaction that these bulbs use to produce their light. Xenon HID bulbs are designed using a more durable quartz glass that is able to withstand the increased pressure and temperature that results from these lights. Xenon HID headlights also dont have a filament. Instead, they generate light by causing electricity to jump from one electrode to another inside the bulb, which causes the xenon gas inside to become highly energized. When the gas is energized, it reacts by emitting a bright light that is reflected out the front of the headlights.
  • LED: One of the more recent developments in automobile lighting, LEDs are very energy-efficient, have an incredibly long usable lifespan, and are significantly smaller than other types of headlights.
