Iranian rial paper money is a form of currency first released by the Iran government in the 18th century. It was issued to replace the qiran as the country?s new legal tender. Some of the uncirculated banknotes issued by the country are sought-after by collectors.
What are the different categories of the rial?The currency is grouped into coins and banknotes. The Kingdom of Persia issued classic rial silver and gold denominations and banknotes as early as the 18th century. In the 1930s, the country?s first national bank expanded the currency by introducing denominations from 5 to 1000 rials. After more than a century of using the rial as legal tender, the Iran government announced a change to the toman in 2016.
What are some of the collectible Iranian rial banknotes?Below are some of the collectible rial paper money issued over the years:
- The 1925-1960 Series - These Iranian rial banknotes feature the image of the Shah of Iran. The reverse side of the bill features the lion and the sun, which are the main emblems of Iran.
- Revolutionary Series - These rial banknotes were issued in the 1980s. Clerics and revolutionaries are featured on the obverse side. The reverse side of specific denominations feature landmarks such as the Kaaba, the University of Tehran, and the Dome of the Rock. At 13mm by 67mm, the 100 rial is the smallest in the series.
- Khomeini Series - These uncirculated banknotes were issued in 1992. They feature religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini on the obverse side. Depending on the denomination, the reverse side of the bill features different images. These include Iran?s first satellite and rocket, Mt. Damavand and the country map with the Atom symbol, among other images.

- National landmarks and personages - Some of the rial currency denominations feature historical personages and recognizable landmarks. These include the Kaaba, the Dome of the Rock, the Sa?dabad Palace, and the Marble Palace.
- Security features - Some of the rial notes are embedded with security features. These include watermarks, intaglio details, and micro prints that are barely visible to the naked eye.
