How Does Digital Video Work?

For years, all recording was done in analog formats that created a direct correspondence between the source and the recording. It worked, but had limitations. The switch to digital opened up a whole new world of capabilities.

What are Mini DV and HDV?

Also known as MiniDV, it's a digital tape format designed from the ground up for video recording. Unlike the competing Digital8 format, Mini DV tapes and were not the same as those used in previous generation analog formats. While the original format was for standard definition, many later camcorders aimed to support an HD standard. The two standards use the same tape but there are some significant differences:

  • MiniDV: Using a 6-millimeter tape, this format stores 60 to 80 minutes of video in SP mode and 90 to 120 minutes in LP mode. Image resolution is about 500 lines allowing for standard definition recordings.
  • HDV: With the same size cassettes, HDV uses MPEG-2 compression to allow for 1080i with just slightly shorter running times than standard definition.

What Features Do Handycams Offer?

Sony Handycams offer a wide range of features to fit every need from SD to HD in easily portable formats. They can all record video and offer playback, but beyond that the range of features is as wide as the range of needs. Just look at two of the different models available:

  • DCR-HC32: This mini DV camcorder features both 20x optical zoom and NightShot Plus mode for making videos at night. It also features a 2.5-inch LCD touchscreen monitor for ease of use and accurate controls. One tradeoff this camcorder makes is that it moves all the DV connectors to the separate base station.
  • HDR-FX1: This HDV model from Sony captures 16:9 widescreen images in 1080i resolution. It features three CCD sensors for high imaging accuracy and is a great choice for anyone looking for an HD camcorder. It also features user-friendly features like image stabilization that can really make a difference when taking shots in public.

Taking Advantage of High Definition

The big advantage of high definition is that the improved resolution makes viewing on larger screens far more practical. With normal definition, moving to a larger screen also means you have to move backwards in order to deal with the reduced pixel density that comes from showing the same quality image at a larger size. Using an HD camcorder means that your video camera is able to capture more details in the scene. You can also take advantage of the fact that MiniDV tape is physically smaller than Hi-8 tape so that the camera can be even smaller and more portable.
