What are the different types of memory modules?

There are two types of RAM modules: DIMM and SO-DIMM. DIMM is suited for desktops. SO-DIMM, which is approximately half the physical size of DIMM, is more suited for laptops. The general rule is that you can match together two different modules from the same generation of DDR technology, but if the two modules operate at different speeds, then the system will probably only operate the speed of the slowest module.
