Womens Faux Leather Coats and Jackets

Faux leather is a man-made material that looks like leather. “Faux” is the French word for “synthetic.” Unlike leather, though, faux leather isn’t made from tanned animal hides.

How long has faux leather been around?

Faux leather has been around since the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1960s, the DuPont Company was finally able to create synthetic leather supple and breathable enough to be used in fashion. Faux leather is found in an assortment of women’s clothing and accessories. It’s particularly useful as a substitute for leather in outerwear.

What is faux leather made of?

The synthetic leather used in fashions is usually made from either polyvinyl chlorides (PVCs) or polyurethanes (PUs). Both materials are plastics derived from chemicals found in petroleum.

Polyvinyl chloride leather, which has been nicknamed “pleather,” is used to manufacture skirts, pants, handbags, shoes, specialty lingerie, and costumes in the Gothic style. Water reducers and dyes are added to polyvinyl chloride to make it suppler and to provide rich color. Layers of polyester fabric and polyvinyl chloride plastic can then be alternated to create a leather-like material that’s durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean.

Polyurethane leather is primarily used in the manufacture of upholstery covers, luggage, jackets, and coats. This type of synthetic leather is generally created by coating fabrics like polyester or cotton with the flexible polyurethane polymer. The resulting material is then treated to look as though it has pores and a natural grain.

What are some faux leather outerwear styles?

Women with a flair for fashion will find some eye-catching faux leather jackets and coats as well as outerwear made of faux fur and faux suede:

  • Biker jackets: Faux leather biker jackets, which are often called moto jackets, have become an American classic. Biker jackets come in a variety of styles, including cropped coats, studded jackets, and short coats with asymmetrical hems. Wear yours with denim jeans and a T-shirt for a casual look, or pair it with a silky dress and heels if you want to look elegant but naughty.
  • Bomber jackets: "Bombers" are an homage to the jackets originally designed for pilots. The biggest difference between biker jackets and pilot jackets is that where the former is most often black, the latter tend to be brown. Additionally, biker jacket collars usually stand up while pilot jacket collars are so full that you may need to turn them down in the back. Pilot jackets are also frequently quilted.
  • Rainwear: Synthetic leather is inherently waterproof, and that makes this fabric great for designing rainwear. There are many raincoat styles in faux leather, including classic trench coats and hooded raingear.
How you take care of faux leather clothing?

One of the advantages that faux leather has over animal leather is that it’s easy to keep clean. All you need to do before you put your clothing back in the closet is to go over it with a soft, clean cloth dipped in a solution of warm water and mild detergent.
